At the Friday, October 12th Homecoming football game, Sands Chevrolet, the Valley Vista football field sponsor has agreed to bring a wrapped SUV to the game and drive it out onto the field prior to the start of the game. We will have a Rotary Club Branded Basket attached to the roof of the vehicle. We will have as many Valley Vista teachers as would like to participate, as well as Principal Lockhart and possibly Superintendent Kellis, lining up (about 20 yds away) around the field/vehicle. Each will receive a 4 inch foam football (courtesy of Liberty Mutual Insurance) with a number on it. We can broadcast over the PA what is going on, welcome any dignitaries and then have the crowd count down 3, 2, 1 and the teachers would toss the footballs attempting to get them into the basket. Everyone that is successful will split the $1000. The game starts at 7PM so we should all be on site between 6PM and 6:30PM. - Safe Water RIM – Director of small outreach ministry through Rancho International Ministries - Safe Water RIM - dedicated to bringing safe drinking water to people without in Africa, Mexico & the Americas, improving family & community health & reducing infant/child mortality. Since the spring of 2013, we have provided safe drinking water and improved sanitation/hygiene solutions to customers in Uganda through the distribution of Biosand Filter technology, plus end-user monitoring and WASH training to families and to CAPs (Community Access Points) - such as schools, clinics, child care centers, midwives, small shops and prisons. Today we positively impact the health of over 10,000 Ugandans – primarily children – through a locally owned and operated BSF manufactory and Water Sanitation Team (Omega Safe Water). In June of 2018 we phased out the Biosand filters, replacing them with Sawyer PointOne filter units. |

Foundation Giving - Open Arms Home for Children in South Africa
Jan. 17, 2019
Bob Solis
Open Arms Home for Children in South Africa. And a great message on service, and the Rotary Foundation
THE GENESIS Open Arms Home for Children was founded by Bob and Sallie Solis of Phoenix, Arizona. After taking a family mission trip to South Africa in 2005, the Solis family felt called to do something about the plight of children orphaned by AIDS in the country. This calling was the genesis of Open Arms and much has been accomplished by this ministry in a short time – thanks to the help of so many people who have joined this effort with their donations, hard work, and prayers.
After that initial trip to South Africa, the Solis family took their life savings and bought the 70-acre hilltop farm that serves as Open Arms Home today. Bob remembers sleeping on the floor on an old mattress in August of 2005—that mattress was the only furniture in the place! Very quickly, funds were raised to buy furnishings and an old car. The Department of Social Development in South Africa followed by granting a license to take in orphaned children and on March 16, 2006, a young two year-old boy named Sifundo was the first child to come to Open Arms. Every year, on March 16, we rejoice and celebrate our founding day.
